Would-be bathers Maureen, aged 10, and six-year-old Kathleen Armstrong

Would-be bathers Maureen, aged 10, and six-year-old Kathleen Armstrong, found themselves out of their depth when they arrived at Pleasurelad Park, Upperby, Carlisle, childrens pool for a cooling dip. Water shortage regulations which came into force in Cumbria this week meant the pool could not be topped up. Using hose pipes in gardens and for car washing has also been banned. 19th August 1976

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this nostalgic print from 1976, we see two would-be bathers, Maureen and Kathleen Armstrong, standing forlornly at Pleasurelad Park in Upperby, Carlisle. The scorching heat of the summer had driven them to seek a cooling dip in the children's pool. However, they found themselves out of their depth as water shortage regulations had come into force in Cumbria that week. The image captures the disappointment on their young faces as they realize that the pool cannot be topped up due to these restrictions. The severity of the situation is further highlighted by the ban on using hose pipes for gardening or car washing. This snapshot serves as a reminder of the challenging times faced during that hot summer in 1976. It reflects not only the impact of water shortages but also how it affected innocent moments of joy and playfulness for children like Maureen and Kathleen. As we look back at this photograph today, it serves as a poignant reminder to appreciate our access to resources such as water and reflect on how climate change has made conservation an even more pressing issue.
