In 1961 some 30, 000 Jamaicans journeyed to Britain in search of work, wealth and happiness.
Now in 1962 the flood tide has reduced to a trickle due to the introduction of the Commonwealth Immigrants Act. A limited number only are allowed in - and these must have a vouchers issued by the British Government.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Dirrell Moss and his family embark on a journey of hope and opportunity. In this photo print, we witness the resilience and determination of Mr. Moss, a skilled house painter from Kingston's Jonestown district. Facing limited work prospects in Jamaica, he has made the bold decision to uproot his family and seek a better life in the United Kingdom. The year is 1962, a time when thousands of Jamaicans like Dirrell set sail for Britain in pursuit of prosperity and happiness. However, their dreams were met with new challenges as the Commonwealth Immigrants Act drastically reduced immigration numbers. Only those fortunate enough to possess government-issued vouchers were granted entry. Against all odds, Dirrell and his loved ones have been granted this golden opportunity. Soon they will bid farewell to their humble single-storey shack in Jonestown, leaving behind poverty-stricken conditions for an uncertain but promising future in London. This powerful image captures the joyous smiles on their faces - symbols of optimism amidst adversity. It serves as a reminder that migration is not merely about seeking greener pastures; it represents courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination to create a better life for oneself and future generations. Ron Burton's photograph immortalizes this significant moment in history - an emblematic representation of the struggles faced by countless families who dared to dream beyond borders.
