Spike Milligan on location filming the Nuns Olympics for his new tv series
Spike Milligan on location filming the Nuns Olympics for his new tv series. They didn t have quite the organisation, perhaps, of the Munich Olympics. But the ecclesiastical games yesterday did have a spirit of their own. There were nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars gathered in Chiswick to display their prowess for Spike Milligan, whose new BBC TV comedy series " A Milligan for all seasons" starts next week. There were hurdle races for the nuns (at least two of whom were fellers), pole vaults for priests... and an amazing- confessional relay, with each runner stopping to confess every 100 yards. Producer Roger Race, slightly bemused, said: " Spike told us to order a couple of dozen actors in clerical garb and this is the result." Spike himself turned out for the hurdles, dressed as a Roma n Catholic priest. Hoping to achieve immortality, presumably, as the Father of the Games. 4th September 1972

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the legendary Spike Milligan on location, filming the Nuns Olympics for his highly anticipated new TV series. The eccentricity and humor that defined Milligan's comedic genius are evident in this image, as he gathers nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars in Chiswick to showcase their athletic prowess. While lacking the grandeur of the Munich Olympics, these ecclesiastical games possess a unique spirit of their own. The event featured hurdle races for nuns (with a surprising number of male participants), pole vaults for priests, and an astonishing confessional relay where each runner would stop every 100 yards to confess. Producer Roger Race was slightly bewildered by the outcome but attributed it to Milligan's directive to order actors dressed in clerical garb. In a delightful twist, Spike himself joined in on the fun by participating in the hurdles while donning a Roman Catholic priest's attire. Perhaps aiming for immortality as "Father of the Games" his presence added an extra layer of hilarity to this unforgettable occasion. Taken on September 4th, 1972 by Ron Burton from Memory Lane Prints, this print serves as a nostalgic reminder of Spike Milligan's comedic brilliance and his ability to create laughter wherever he went.
