EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming print from the 1980s, we see a group of dedicated workers at the Dewhirst shirt factory in Dormanstown making a generous donation to Lowfields Special School in South Bank. The school had recently fallen victim to a break-in that resulted in the theft of all their video and computer equipment. Determined to help, the staff at Dewhirst raised an impressive £802, which not only covered the cost of replacing the stolen equipment but also allowed for an educational trip to London for 12 lucky pupils. Captured in this image are three beaming students - Ellen McGarrity, Karen Gill, and Steven Wray - alongside Mrs. Josie Fox who proudly hands over the cheque on behalf of her fellow factory girls. Their smiles reflect both gratitude and hope as they know that their contribution will make a significant difference in enhancing education opportunities for these deserving children. This photograph serves as a reminder of how communities can come together during challenging times and showcases the power of compassion and solidarity. It is a testament to human kindness transcending boundaries such as age or occupation. As we look back on this moment captured on July 1st, 1983, it inspires us to continue supporting one another and fostering empathy within our own communities today.
