December 1966.
The events of Friday, 21 October 1966
Tip no. 7, which was 500 feet above the village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, started to slide at 9.15 am. It was the last day before half-term at the Pantglas schools below. It first hit a farm, killing everybody in it. Then it engulfed Pantglas Junior School, killing 109 children and five teachers. Only a handful of the children aged between seven and ten survived. The tip comprised colliery waste, liquefied by the springs underneath. The liquefied flow slide of about 100, 000 tons of slurry lost energy and solidified again after hitting the school and neighbouring houses. A total of 144 people died. 116 children and 28 adults

Tom Jones brings hope and healing through his powerful performance at a charity concert in aid of the Aberfan Fund. The photograph captures the legendary singer, Tom Jones, during a heartfelt concert held at Sophia Gardens Pavilion in Cardiff on a December night in 1966. This image holds deep significance as it was taken just weeks after the devastating events of October 21st, 1966. On that tragic day, Tip no. 7 above Aberfan village gave way, unleashing an unstoppable torrent of colliery waste upon Pantglas Junior School and its surrounding community. The resulting loss of life was immense - 116 innocent children and 28 adults perished. In the face of such unimaginable grief and sorrow, Tom Jones took to the stage to offer solace through his music. With his guitar in hand and passion in his voice, he became not only an entertainer but also an icon of resilience and unity for those affected by this horrific tragedy. As he sang with unwavering dedication, Tom Jones reminded us all that even amidst darkness, music has the power to heal wounds and bring people together. This print serves as a poignant reminder of both the devastation suffered by Aberfan and the strength found within communities when they come together for a common cause.
