Birkby Infants School pupils Tony Chong (left), Craig Law and Kuljinder Singh are pictured at Colne Valley Museum, Golcar, with Mrs Monica Wood. They took a step back in time and dressed in Victorian costume to do such tasks as washing, ironing, spinning and weaving. The party of children, all aged between five and six, were helped to make their own lunch, a traditional vegetable stew with bread. The day at the museum ties in with their class work on by gone days in various countries. 1st November 1985

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming print from 1985, Birkby Infants School pupils Tony Chong, Craig Law, and Kuljinder Singh are transported back in time at Colne Valley Museum in Golcar. Dressed in authentic Victorian costumes, these young learners eagerly engage in tasks that were once commonplace during the bygone era. Under the watchful eye of Mrs. Monica Wood, the children immerse themselves in a hands-on experience of history. They take on various domestic chores such as washing clothes, ironing garments, spinning yarns, and weaving fabrics - all activities that would have been part of everyday life for Victorians. But it's not just work they undertake; they also learn to prepare their own lunch following traditional recipes. With guidance from museum staff members, these budding chefs create a hearty vegetable stew accompanied by freshly baked bread - a meal reminiscent of what families might have enjoyed during those times. This educational excursion aligns perfectly with the students' classroom studies on historical periods across different countries. By stepping into the shoes of their ancestors and engaging with tangible artifacts and practices from long ago, these five- and six-year-olds gain a deeper understanding of history beyond textbooks. The joyous expressions captured on their faces reflect both their enthusiasm for learning and the magic created within this immersive museum experience. This snapshot serves as a delightful reminder that education can be an adventure through time itself.
