EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming print from 1985, we witness the launch of a remarkable campaign in Cleveland to combat the devastating effects of glaucoma. The community has come together with a shared goal of raising £30,000 for a state-of-the-art piece of high-technology equipment that can detect early stages of this blinding disease. At the North Riding Infirmary in Middlesbrough, the campaign received an incredible boost when the Middlesbrough-Teesside Lions Club presented a generous cheque worth £250. This act of kindness and support demonstrates the power and compassion within our society. Seated at the center is Mr. Gordon Maclure, a consultant ophthalmologist who will play a pivotal role in utilizing this advanced technology to diagnose patients at an early stage. To his right are David Gibson, chairman of the league of friends, and Michael Bloomfield from Middlesbrough Lions who have contributed significantly towards achieving their fundraising target. Taking charge at the controls is orthopist Gillian Walker, symbolizing hope and progress as she prepares to utilize this groundbreaking machine for diagnosis and treatment purposes. This photograph captures not only a significant moment in medical history but also showcases how communities can unite for noble causes. It serves as a reminder that by working together selflessly, we can make great strides towards improving healthcare accessibility and eradicating diseases that threaten our vision.
