Oakes Majorettes have had a new beginning, in more ways than one

Oakes Majorettes have had a new beginning, in more ways than one. On Saturday they acquired a new name, New Concept, and a new headquarters. Fronted by corps drum major Miss Anne-Marie Rainey, they are pictured marching from their old base at Oakes Youth Club, which is due for demolition, to their new home at Lindley Adult Shool, in Lyndhurst Avenue. The corps decided to change their name following their transformation last year from a majorette troupe to a marching band. Anne-Marie, 18, of Oakes, has won the British Youth Band Association drum major novice class. The girls are judged at various competitions held during the season, and Anne-Marie came out the overall winner after being voted the top drum major at two events this season. 11th October 1986

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Oakes Majorettes during a significant moment of change and growth. In more ways than one, they have embarked on a new beginning. On this particular Saturday, the troupe acquired a fresh identity as New Concept and found themselves with a brand-new headquarters. Led by their talented corps drum major, Miss Anne-Marie Rainey, the majorettes are seen proudly marching from their old base at Oakes Youth Club to their new home at Lindley Adult School. Last year marked an important transformation for the group as they transitioned from being solely majorettes to becoming a full-fledged marching band. This pivotal shift inspired them to adopt their new name, symbolizing their evolution and embracing this exciting chapter in their journey. Anne-Marie Rainey herself is no stranger to success within her role as drum major. At just 18 years old and hailing from Oakes, she has already achieved recognition by winning the prestigious British Youth Band Association drum major novice class. Her exceptional talent and dedication have earned her top honors at multiple competitions throughout the season. The photograph not only encapsulates this remarkable milestone but also serves as a testament to the camaraderie shared among these young performers. As they march together towards an uncertain future, they do so with determination, unity, and unwavering passion for music and performance art.
