EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming print from 1988, we witness the triumph of two green-fingered cubs, David Ryan and Darren Neary. After winning a competition to grow the tallest sunflower, these determined scouts had to climb a ladder just to tend their magnificent creation. The contest brought together approximately 150 cubs from all over the Holme Valley under the organization of district cub scout leader Mrs Valerie Gray. David emerged as the victor with his towering sunflower reaching an impressive height of 8 feet and 2 inches. Not far behind was Darren, securing second place with his sunflower standing tall at 7 feet and 10 inches. Both boys hail from the esteemed 5th Meltham Monday Pack. Captured in this snapshot is not only their well-deserved victory but also their dedication towards nurturing nature's beauty. Here they are seen diligently watering another sunflower grown by their Akela, Mrs Anne Austwick. This heartwarming image encapsulates the innocence and joy of childhood activities while highlighting important values such as teamwork, perseverance, and appreciation for nature's wonders. It serves as a delightful reminder that even in simpler times like the 1980s, children found immense satisfaction in tending gardens and participating in friendly competitions. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints, this photograph transports us back to an era when scouting adventures fostered lifelong friendships and instilled valuable life skills within young hearts.
