Pedestrians - and vehicles - crossing... Mount Pleasant Junior School pupils have had a road safety lesson with a difference. Huddersfield accident prevention officer, PC Alan Laurie, visited the school to get over the road safety message and the seven to nine year olds took part in a role-play exercise called Safe and Sound. The children pretended to be pedestrians, vehicles, a police officer and a crossing patrol warden to act out road situations. 10th May 1990

This vintage print captures a unique road safety lesson at Mount Pleasant Junior School in Huddersfield. In 1990, PC Alan Laurie, an accident prevention officer, visited the school to impart important road safety knowledge to the seven to nine-year-old pupils. The lesson took an interactive turn with a role-play exercise called Safe and Sound. In this engaging activity, the children assumed various roles such as pedestrians, vehicles, a police officer, and even a crossing patrol warden. They enthusiastically acted out different road situations to better understand how to navigate safely on the streets. This hands-on approach aimed to make road safety concepts more relatable and memorable for these young learners. The photograph showcases their involvement and dedication towards learning about road safety. It serves as a nostalgic reminder of educational practices from the past when practical lessons were valued alongside traditional classroom teaching methods. As we look back on this snapshot from "all our yesterdays" it is evident that initiatives like these played an essential role in shaping responsible attitudes towards transportation among primary school children. This image not only captures a moment frozen in time but also represents the collective efforts made by educators and community members alike in ensuring safer roads for future generations.
