A view of the path the new road bridge will take. On the left is the transporter bridge and on the right the railway bridge. Cranes are in use on work on the foundations of the new bridge, and on the far bank some of the completed concrete foundations on the Runcorn side can be seen. In the foreground, rubble shows where demolition has taken place, isolating the house in the centre where Mrs Mary Wilson sits tight in the path of the bridge, having refused alternative offers of accommodation. Runcorn is within the borough of Halton in the county of Cheshire. 24th June 1957

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Runcorn, Cheshire. The image showcases the path that the new road bridge will take, with the iconic transporter bridge standing proudly on the left and the railway bridge on the right. Cranes dominate the scene as they diligently work on laying down foundations for this monumental construction project. On closer inspection, one can spot completed concrete foundations across the riverbank on the Runcorn side, indicating progress made thus far. However, amidst all this activity lies a solitary house in the center of it all. This is where Mrs Mary Wilson resides, defiantly refusing alternative offers of accommodation despite her home being isolated by demolition rubble. The photograph serves as a testament to both human resilience and urban development during this era. It encapsulates not only industrial growth but also highlights how communities were affected by such advancements. Runcorn's transformation within Halton Borough is vividly portrayed here – a blend of old and new coexisting harmoniously. Taken on June 24th, 1957, this snapshot freezes time at an important juncture in local history when progress clashed with tradition. As we gaze upon this remarkable image today, we are reminded of how our surroundings have evolved over time while acknowledging those who stood their ground amidst change's relentless march forward.
