EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming print from 1985, we see six-year-old swimmer Charlotte Ann St Clair proudly holding her trophy as she is crowned the "Duckling of the Year" at Elland Baths. Standing beside her is Lucinda Ward, the runner-up in this prestigious competition. Charlotte, a pupil of Greetland Junior and Infants School, has shown remarkable improvement over the past year, earning her this well-deserved recognition. The trophy was presented to her by Calderdale Mayoress Mrs Edna Bradley, who commended Charlotte's dedication and progress in swimming. Lucinda Ward, also six years old and hailing from Rishworth, received a plaque for her outstanding performance as well. Deputy Mayoress Mrs Eva Mullen had the honor of presenting Lucinda with this special award. The ceremony was attended by Mr Graham Nash, principal officer for Calderdale Recreational Services which oversees these swimming sessions. This event not only celebrates these young girls' achievements but also highlights the importance of exercise and sportsmanship among children. This charming snapshot captures a moment frozen in time - an era when childhood innocence thrived alongside competitive spirit. It serves as a reminder that even at such tender ages, determination and hard work can lead to great accomplishments.
