A centuries old cottage, possibly the oldest in Cardiff

A centuries old cottage, possibly the oldest in Cardiff, will soon be welcoming a new resident-its present owner is selling up and moving to California.
When it was built around 1740 the two-up, two-down " ty bach twt" cottage, in what is now Romilly Road, Cardiff, was the home for the gardner of one of the big houses which used to dominate the area.
Once it stood on its own orchard, surrounded by flowers and green fields, but 50 years ago it was all but swallowed up when a local builder erected the terrace houses that was to become Romilly Road.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a centuries-old cottage, quite possibly the oldest in Cardiff. Nestled on Romilly Road, this two-up, two-down "ty bach twt" cottage was constructed around 1740 and served as the humble abode for the gardener of one of the grand houses that once graced the neighborhood. Back then, it stood proudly amidst its own orchard, surrounded by vibrant flowers and lush green fields. However, time has brought changes to this quaint dwelling. Nearly half a century ago, a local builder erected terrace houses along Romilly Road, engulfing this historic cottage within their embrace. Despite being encircled by modernity, it has managed to retain its timeless charm and allure. Now standing at a crossroads in its long history, this cherished home is preparing to welcome a new resident as its current owner decides to sell up and embark on an exciting journey across continents to California. As they bid farewell to their beloved abode steeped in history and memories dating back centuries, they leave behind an indelible mark on Cardiff's heritage. This evocative photograph transports us back to September 8th, 1983 when it was taken—a glimpse into a bygone era captured forever through lens and film. It serves as both a testament to our ever-changing world and a reminder of the enduring beauty found within these ancient walls.
