A group of eight Shelley High School girls scored a surprise success when a play they had
A group of eight Shelley High School girls scored a surprise success when a play they had written for practice beat the " real" play. The school entered the National Students Drama Festival and earlier this month an adjudicator was sent to judge their work. The main feature was a play called Claymen and to fill up some spare time the girls wrote a practice piece, Lonesome Road. The adjudicator was so impressed with Lonesome Road she asked to see it again next morning. Suffering the effects of a previous nights 18th birthday party, the cast was dragged back to the stage for a repeat performance. Five days later the girls - who are seen with drama teacher Mrs Jacqui Gill - were told they had won a place at the 32nd Sunday Times Student Drama Festival in Wakefield. They are being sponsored by ICI and will perform the play at Bretton Hall next Tuesday at 3.15 and 7.30. 7th April 1987

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see a group of eight talented and determined girls from Shelley High School who achieved an unexpected triumph. These young ladies had written a play for their own practice, little did they know that it would outshine the "real" play at the National Students Drama Festival. The festival sent an adjudicator to judge their work, and to everyone's surprise, the main attraction became their practice piece called Lonesome Road. Despite suffering from the effects of a wild 18th birthday party the night before, these dedicated performers were summoned back to the stage by the impressed adjudicator for an encore performance of Lonesome Road. Their hard work paid off when they received news five days later that they had secured a place at the prestigious 32nd Sunday Times Student Drama Festival in Wakefield. Supported by ICI as sponsors, these talented girls will have the opportunity to showcase their exceptional skills at Bretton Hall next Tuesday at both 3:15 PM and 7:30 PM. This remarkable achievement not only highlights their talent but also reflects positively on their drama teacher Mrs Jacqui Gill. This photograph captures a momentous milestone in these girls' lives - one that showcases determination, creativity, and teamwork. It serves as a reminder that with passion and dedication, even unexpected successes can be attained.
