An eastern goddess sits in a garage in the village that wants to get rid of her
An eastern goddess sits in a garage in the village that wants to get rid of her. The Squire and villagers of Braunton, north Devon believe a curse is on the statue which is said to have been stolen form an eastern temple more than a century ago. Sir William Williams, squire of Upcott House where the statue had stood until last week, blames it for his families misfortune and sent it to the Parish Councillor. Now the statue sits at George Staddons garage waiting for a passing motorist to take a shine to her. 20th September 1954

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we find ourselves transported to the quaint village of Braunton in north Devon during the 1950s. The image captures an intriguing sight - an eastern goddess sitting gracefully amidst a cluttered garage. This statue, believed to have been stolen from a distant temple over a century ago, has become the center of attention for the superstitious villagers who are desperate to rid themselves of its alleged curse. Sir William Williams, squire of Upcott House, firmly believes that his family's misfortunes can be attributed to this enigmatic figure. Determined to break free from its perceived hex, he sent it away to George Staddons' garage where it now patiently awaits its fate. Perhaps serendipity will strike when a passing motorist takes notice and decides to give her a new home. The juxtaposition between ancient mysticism and modern-day transportation is striking as cars line up at the petrol station nearby. As drivers refuel their vehicles with Esso petrol under the watchful gaze of this mystical deity, one cannot help but wonder if luck will favor those who dare approach her. This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of humanity's enduring fascination with superstition and our eternal quest for good fortune in unexpected places.
