EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the essence of Birmingham's architectural heritage, this print showcases the iconic Alpha Tower in all its glory. Standing tall as a testament to modern design, this commercial building was originally constructed as the headquarters for ATV, a prominent television company. Designed by George Marsh of Richard Seifert & Partners, it formed an integral part of ATV Centre - a bustling production studio complex. Nowadays, under the management of GVA Grimley, Alpha Tower offers office spaces to various esteemed companies and organizations such as Network Rail and Jacobs Engineering. However, it is worth noting that even Birmingham City Council once called this remarkable structure their home before relocating in 2010. The photograph itself captures a significant moment during construction - showcasing the intricate hyperbolic paraboloid roof structure that elegantly covers a vast restaurant area measuring 406 square meters. Taken in January 1971 during erection stages, one can observe scaffolding and workmen diligently putting together this architectural marvel before introducing an inner lining of beech boarding. This picture not only encapsulates the spirit of industrial progress but also serves as a nostalgic reminder of Birmingham's rich history throughout the 20th century. A true landmark within the city skyline, Alpha Tower stands tall with pride while symbolizing innovation and growth.
