Crowds besieged Petticoat lane to buy their Christmas presents
Crowds besieged Petticoat lane to buy their Christmas presents and as usual developed into a milling throng. Every conceivable item was on sale including baked chestnuts, ice cream, sleeping dolls and rat traps. A band of blind musicians were playing Christmas Carols and although the music was sweet and seasonal, it was difficult to pick them out from among the throng of people. 19th December 1948.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the bustling streets of London's Petticoat Lane in December 1948. As Christmas approached, crowds flocked to this vibrant market in search of the perfect presents for their loved ones. The scene is a true reflection of the festive spirit, with people from all walks of life coming together in a milling throng. The image captures the essence of Petticoat Lane, showcasing its diverse offerings. From baked chestnuts to ice cream, sleeping dolls to rat traps, every imaginable item was available for purchase. Amidst this sea of merchandise stands a group of blind musicians playing sweet and seasonal Christmas Carols. Their melodies blend harmoniously with the lively atmosphere but are difficult to discern amidst the crowd. London's inner boroughs were known for their vibrant markets during this era, and Petticoat Lane was no exception. This photograph perfectly encapsulates both the commercial buzz and cultural richness that defined these areas in mid-20th century London.
