Nuns build a convent. Every moring 18 nuns don aprons over their habits and start building. They are out to build their own chapel, cloisters, choir and cells. All their building knowledge has been gained from textbooks. The nuns are members of the Carmelite Order, and were moved from Berkhamsted, Herts, to a derelict house at Presteigne, on the Hereford-Radnor Border. Pictured the nuns prepare the ground in front of the Sacristy for the new Chapel which they are to build on 15th March 1954

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the 1950s, where a group of determined nuns from the Carmelite Order embark on an extraordinary mission. Every morning, these eighteen devoted women clad in their traditional habits don aprons over them and set out to build their own convent. Armed with textbooks as their only guide, they fearlessly take on the task of constructing a chapel, cloisters, choir area, and individual cells. The scene captured in this image showcases the nuns diligently preparing the ground in front of the Sacristy for their soon-to-be-built chapel. Bricks lay scattered around them while ladders lean against walls awaiting further use. With pickaxes and spades in hand, these unknown-aged sisters showcase unwavering determination as they dig deep into the earth. Located at Presteigne on the Hereford-Radnor Border, this derelict house became a blank canvas for these remarkable women to transform it into a place of worship and solace. Their tireless efforts demonstrate not only their faith but also their resilience and resourcefulness. This photograph is a testament to human strength and dedication; it encapsulates both physical labor and spiritual devotion. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but be inspired by these courageous nuns who defied societal norms to create something beautiful from scratch.
