Sir Alec Douglas Home came a by-election cropper on Tuesday 29th October 1963. Sir Alec, Prime Minister and the candidate for Kinross and West Perthshire, was about to speak at Dunning Village. Farm owner Sir Alec climbed a two step ladder to a hay wagon " rostrum". Crash! The steps toppled and so did Sir Alec, grazing his shins in the fall. But he managed to smile it off " Better to get the fall over in good time, " he told the crowd.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a memorable moment in British political history. On Tuesday, October 29th, 1963, Sir Alec Douglas Home faced an unexpected mishap during a by-election campaign in Kinross and West Perthshire. As the Prime Minister and candidate for the constituency, Sir Alec was preparing to address the crowd gathered at Dunning Village. In an attempt to elevate his position on a hay wagon "rostrum". Sir Alec climbed a two-step ladder with confidence. However, fate had other plans as the steps suddenly gave way beneath him. The unfortunate fall caused him to graze his shins but did not dampen his spirits. Ever resilient and quick-witted, Sir Alec managed to smile off the incident and quipped that it was better to get the fall over with early on. Undeterred by this minor setback, he proceeded with his speech without missing a beat. The photograph shows Sir Alec standing tall after recovering from his tumble while addressing the attentive audience. By his side are the very steps that led to his downfall just moments before. This snapshot serves as a testament to both resilience and humor in politics. Preserved through time by Memory Lane Prints, this image offers us a glimpse into an era of conservative politics in Britain during the 1960s when even prominent figures like Prime Ministers could stumble but still find their footing again.
