The RAFs new pilot training scheme known as the Provost - Vampire Sequence

The RAFs new pilot training scheme known as the Provost - Vampire Sequence, under which pilots qualify for their wings on jet aircraft, is now in operation and the first course of pilots has just been passed out at No. 5 Flying Training School at Oakington, Cambridgeshire. Pictured is Flying Officer Ws Burrows, an instructor at the Vampire Traing School, puting Auxiliary Pilot Officer W F Gough of Cranbrook, Kent, through his blindfold training. This training is to accustom pilots to finding their instruments quickly in the dark as they might have to in the event of a fire which filled the cockpit with smoke.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we are transported back to the 1950s, witnessing a significant moment in the Royal Air Force's new pilot training scheme. The image showcases the Provost - Vampire Sequence, an innovative program that enables pilots to earn their wings on jet aircraft. At No. 5 Flying Training School in Oakington, Cambridgeshire, we witness the graduation of the first batch of pilots who have successfully completed this groundbreaking course. The focal point of the picture is Flying Officer Ws Burrows, an esteemed instructor at the Vampire Training School. He is seen guiding Auxiliary Pilot Officer W F Gough through a blindfold training exercise. This particular drill aims to prepare pilots for emergency situations such as cockpit fires that may engulf them in smoke and darkness. By familiarizing themselves with instrument navigation even under adverse conditions, these young aviators are being equipped with vital skills necessary for their future missions. The photograph exudes a sense of determination and dedication as both officers engage in this rigorous training session. It serves as a testament to the RAF's commitment towards producing skilled and resilient pilots capable of facing any challenges they may encounter during their service. Preserved by Memory Lane Prints and captured by NCJ-Kemsley, this snapshot not only immortalizes a historic milestone but also pays homage to those brave individuals who dedicated themselves to protecting our skies during times of war and beyond.
