HMS Dreadnought, an 18, 110-ton battleship built at Portsmouth Dockyard

HMS Dreadnought, an 18, 110-ton battleship built at Portsmouth Dockyard, England shown here was a battleship of the British Royal Navy that revolutionised naval power. Her entry into service in 1906 represented a marked advance in naval technology that her name came to be associated with an entire generation of battleships, known as the " dreadnoughts". During the First World War HMS Dreadnought served with the 4th Battle Squadron in the North Sea. On 18 March 1915, while on patrol, she rammed and sank the German Submarine U-29. From May 1916, Dreadnought was flagship of the 3rd Battle Squadron, based on the Thames to counter the threat of bombardment by German battlecruisers. Placed in reserve in 1919, the once-revolutionary warship was sold for scrap in 1922. Circa 1906

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic HMS Dreadnought, a groundbreaking battleship that forever changed naval power. Built at Portsmouth Dockyard in England, this 18,110-ton vessel was a true marvel of its time. Its entry into service in 1906 marked a significant leap forward in naval technology, leading to an entire generation of battleships being named after it - the "dreadnoughts". During World War I, HMS Dreadnought played a crucial role as part of the 4th Battle Squadron in the North Sea. It demonstrated its might on 18 March 1915 when it bravely rammed and sank the German Submarine U-29 while on patrol. Later on, from May 1916 onwards, this majestic warship served as flagship for the formidable 3rd Battle Squadron stationed along the Thames River. Its purpose was to counter any potential bombardment by German battlecruisers. After years of honorable service defending British waters, HMS Dreadnought was eventually placed in reserve in 1919. Sadly, despite its once-revolutionary status and historical significance, this remarkable vessel met its fate when it was sold for scrap in 1922. This stunning photograph captures not only the grandeur and strength of HMS Dreadnought but also serves as a poignant reminder of its pivotal role during times of war and conflict. A true relic from early twentieth-century military history preserved through Memory Lane Prints' collection.
