If you want a healthy job and like meeting people, deliver the mail, says Mrs

If you want a healthy job and like meeting people, deliver the mail, says Mrs. Gertrude Haynes. And she should know because she has just retired after 32 years as postwoman in the village of Priors Marston. She has far-reaching family links with the Post Office. Her great aunt ran the village post office for 42 years and her mother was post-mistress for 44 years. She took over the job of postwoman for the village in 1942. " I never dreamed I would stay in the job this long, but I loved it, " she said. " I used to go out in all weathers. I once got stuck in a snow drift. When I started they offered me trousers to wear, but I thought I d rather wear a skirt." Postal workers wages were lower in those days as well as the hemlines. When she fist started work she was earning just under £ 2 a week.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a dedicated postwoman, Mrs. Gertrude Haynes, who recently retired after an impressive 32-year career in the village of Priors Marston. With deep family ties to the Post Office, including her great aunt's long tenure as the post office manager and her mother's role as post-mistress, Mrs. Haynes followed in their footsteps by taking on the responsibility of delivering mail for her community in 1942. In this image, we see Mrs. Haynes proudly posing with her trusty bicycle, which served as both her mode of transport and a symbol of efficiency during her postal rounds. Dressed impeccably in a skirt despite being offered trousers for practicality's sake, she embodies resilience and dedication to duty. Mrs. Haynes fondly recalls braving all weather conditions during her service; even getting stuck once in a snow drift did not deter her from completing deliveries promptly. It is evident that she genuinely loved every aspect of her job - meeting people along the way and ensuring their mail reached them reliably. The photograph also offers us a glimpse into 1970s fashion trends with its mention of hemlines and reflects on how postal workers' wages were considerably lower back then. As we admire this snapshot from Memory Lane Prints, let us celebrate Mrs. Gertrude Haynes' remarkable commitment to public service while acknowledging the vital role played by postal workers like herself in connecting communities through reliable mail delivery services.
