Coracle fishers on the River Teifi at Cenarth: Following a pattern evolved over two
Coracle fishers on the River Teifi at Cenarth: Following a pattern evolved over two thousand years ago, coracle builders construct the oval, basket-shaped boats that were being used by ancient Britons when Caesar invaded the island. Willow and hazel rods are bent into shape and covered with tarred calico, making a small, light craft in which a single paddler sits. They are used mainly by salmon fishers along remote Welsh rivers, and coracle men have been responsible for adding measurably to Britains fish supply during the war. When conditions are favourable the men often work for 19 hours a day. Circa 1945

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a timeless scene on the River Teifi at Cenarth, where coracle fishers diligently follow a pattern that has evolved over two thousand years. These skilled craftsmen construct oval, basket-shaped boats using willow and hazel rods, just as ancient Britons did during Caesar's invasion of the island. The lightweight craft is covered with tarred calico, providing a small vessel in which a single paddler can sit. These coracles are predominantly used by salmon fishers along remote Welsh rivers, playing an essential role in Britain's fish supply during the war years. The dedication of these coracle men is evident as they often work tirelessly for up to 19 hours a day when conditions are favorable. In this image from circa 1945, we witness three men engaged in their daily routine on the river. Their mixed age range reflects the passing down of traditional knowledge and skills through generations. Against the backdrop of rural Wales, surrounded by nature's beauty and tranquility, these fishermen row their coracles with expertise honed over centuries. This photograph serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and our enduring connection with nature. It reminds us that even amidst modern advancements, there are traditions deeply rooted in history that continue to shape our lives today.
