EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment in history at the Bampton, Devon Pony Fair in 1948. The image showcases the hustle and bustle of farmers and dealers gathering in this small town, braving heavy rain and mud to auction off hundreds of wild ponies driven from Exmoor. In an era where these majestic creatures were sold for a mere 2/6d before the war, it is remarkable to note that their average price had risen to £5 per pony by 1948. This significant increase reflects both the changing times and the value placed on these beautiful animals. The photograph also highlights the immense challenge faced by owners who drove these untamed ponies from the moor. Struggling against nature's elements, they endeavor to corral them into an auctioning enclosure with only manpower as their aid. These wild ponies have never felt human touch before, making this task all the more arduous. As you gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, you can almost feel yourself transported back to that rainy October day in 1948. The crowd clad in flat caps stands witness to a unique spectacle - one filled with determination, resilience, and perhaps even a hint of sadness as these once-wild creatures find themselves thrust into new lives beyond Exmoor's borders. This Memory Lane Print not only immortalizes a specific moment but also serves as a reminder of our ever-changing relationship with animals throughout history.
