Coal - Phurnacite Plant - Abercwmboi - Aberaman - Once known as " the worst local industrial pollution in the United Kingdom" - 18th October 1979 - Western Mail and Echo Copyright. *AT its peak, the Phurnacite plant was producing a million tons of briquettes a year and more than 1, 200 people from the Cynon Valley were employed at the factory. But by the mid-1970s the factory was the focus of numerous complaints about pollution and was dubbed ithe dirtiest factory in Europei. In the late 1980s owners were refused permission for a new plant and, blaming a lack of investment in the £ 100m project by the UK Government, the factory was closed in 1991. A report by the former National Public Health Service, published in 2003, said: iThe [briquette-making] process generated large amounts of gas, tar, ammonia and other polycyclic hydrocarbons.i
