Coal - Phurnacite Plant - Abercwmboi - Aberaman - 28th October 1988
Coal - Phurnacite Plant - Abercwmboi - Aberaman - 28th October 1988.
*CONDITIONS in a South Wales smokeless fuels plant where more than 1, 200 men worked were " terrible" according to a former worker who has developed serious ill health. Fred Richards, 78, from Miskin near Mountain Ash, worked at the Phurnacite plant in Abercwmboi, in the Cynon Valley, for more than 30 years. He is among a group litigation of 300 ex-workers who say they have developed cancers and respiratory diseases because of working there. Mr Richards suffered bladder cancer twice - once when a tumour was removed in October 2000, before another tumour was found and removed two years later. He also had surgery on bowel cancer in 2007 and has respiratory disability. Ex-workers claim British Coal failed to give them necessary protection and have launched a bid for compensation at Cardiffs High Court. Ronald Walker QC, for defendants the Department of Energy and the British Coal Board, said: " The thrust of your evidence is wherever you worked the working conditions were very unpleasant."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the Coal - Phurnacite Plant in Abercwmboi, Aberaman on October 28th, 1988. The image serves as a stark reminder of the harsh working conditions that more than 1,200 men endured at this South Wales smokeless fuels plant. Fred Richards, a former worker who spent over three decades at the plant, describes these conditions as "terrible". Sadly, Mr. Richards has developed serious health issues as a result of his time there. He is just one of 300 ex-workers who have come forward with claims of cancer and respiratory diseases linked to their employment. Mr. Richards himself battled bladder cancer twice; undergoing surgery to remove tumors in both 2000 and two years later. In addition to this, he also underwent surgery for bowel cancer in 2007 and now suffers from respiratory disability. These brave ex-workers accuse British Coal of failing to provide them with necessary protection while working at the Phurnacite plant. As a result, they have launched legal proceedings seeking compensation at Cardiff's High Court. The photograph not only documents an important moment in history but also sheds light on the struggles faced by workers during this era. It serves as a poignant reminder that behind every industry lie individuals whose lives were forever impacted by their labor.
