The Vickers VC10 making its first taxi test on the runway at the Vickers Airfield
The Vickers VC10 making its first taxi test on the runway at the Vickers Airfield on the old Brooklands racing track.
People living nearby had been warned of the terrific noise to be expected from the four Rolls Royce Conway engines. Ambulances had been made available for any infirm people to be moved from the immediate neighbourhood. A blast wall had been built to deflect upwards the 40 ton pressure from the four engines, whuich was sufficient to blow a train off the railtrack behind the runway.

The Vickers VC10 - A Test of Power and Precision at the Historic Vickers Airfield
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we witness a momentous occasion as the iconic Vickers VC10 embarks on its first taxi test. Captured on the runway at the renowned Vickers Airfield, which once graced the hallowed grounds of the old Brooklands racing track, this image transports us back to June 29th, 1962. As anticipation filled the air, nearby residents were forewarned about the thunderous roar that would emanate from the four mighty Rolls Royce Conway engines. Such was their power that ambulances stood ready to assist any infirm individuals who might be overwhelmed by this awe-inspiring spectacle. To safeguard against potential damage caused by these colossal engines' forceful thrust, a formidable blast wall had been erected to redirect their immense 40-ton pressure skyward. It is said that such force could even dislodge a train from its tracks if unleashed in an unfortunate direction. This photograph not only captures a significant milestone in aerospace history but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess. The Vickers VC10 symbolizes progress and innovation in aviation during an era when business travel and leisurely vacations took flight like never before.
