EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Coal Queen Arlene puts a stop to swear-words at the coal face" we are transported back to October 1966, where a remarkable event took place at a Yorkshire colliery. The 1,800 pitmen were on their best behavior as they welcomed their esteemed guest, the Coal Queen herself, Arlene Silkstone. At just 20 years old, Arlene had been crowned Yorkshire Miners Queen and was invited by the Coal Board to explore her domain. As she stood confidently in front of the winding tower and mine shaft, dressed in practical overalls that mirrored the attire of her male counterparts, Arlene symbolized progress and empowerment for women in an industry dominated by men. Her presence brought about a temporary cessation of swear-words at the coal face - a testament to both her influence and respect from those around her. This photograph captures not only an important moment in history but also showcases the strength and determination embodied by women working in coal mining during this era. It serves as a reminder that gender barriers can be broken down when individuals like Arlene rise above societal expectations and make their mark on traditionally male-dominated industries.
