A dozen competitiors braved the strong winds to take part in Leamington

A dozen competitiors braved the strong winds to take part in Leamingtons first Shrove Tuesday pancake race. The winner, Mrs. Joan Merrick, of Stockton Road, Long Itchington, ran the 100 yard course in just over 18 seconds. She was presented with a 60 gas cooker but she has no gas supply at her home so will give the cooker to her father. Second over the finishing line was the youngest entrant, 13-year-old Veronica Relins, who was able to take part because Blackdown High School in Leamington is partially closed because of the fuel shortage. Veronica was presented with a food hamper. Our photograph shows another heat of the races.

EDITORS COMMENTS
A nostalgic glimpse into Leamington's first Shrove Tuesday pancake race, where a dozen brave competitors defied the strong winds to participate. The exhilarating event took place on 15th February 1972 and showcased the town's vibrant customs and traditions. Capturing the spirit of friendly competition, our photograph features one of the thrilling heats. The star of the day was Mrs. Joan Merrick from Stockton Road, Long Itchington, who emerged victorious by completing the challenging 100-yard course in just over 18 seconds. As her prize, she received a generous gift—a brand new gas cooker. However, due to an unfortunate lack of gas supply at her home, Mrs. Merrick selflessly decided to pass on this valuable appliance to her father. In a remarkable display of talent and determination, thirteen-year-old Veronica Relins claimed second place as the youngest participant in the race. Her eligibility stemmed from Blackdown High School's partial closure caused by a fuel shortage—an unexpected opportunity that she seized with gusto! In recognition of her achievement, Veronica was presented with a delightful food hamper. This print transports us back in time to witness not only an exciting sporting event but also highlights how communities come together during festive occasions like Pancake Day—celebrated with enthusiasm by both participants and spectators alike.
