John Coutts sets out his soldiers for a recreation of the 1759 Battle of Minden.
Horsemen and soldiers in the colourful uniforms of long-forgotten regiments went on parade at an event in Durham in 1983.
And they all fitted into one large room at Durham Universitys Dunelm House.
The event was Warfare through the Ages the Norths major war games and military modelling exhibition and all the combatants were no more than one-and-a-half inches tall.
Among the staged battles were Napoleons assault on Russian positions, the clash at Edgehill between the Cavaliers and Roundheads and the Battle of Minden, one of Britains great victories of the 18th Century.
As well as historical recreations, the exhibition featured the world of fantasy and science fiction, with adventurous bands of wizards and dwarfs fighting dragons, goblins and alien creatures from other galaxies.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the year 1983 in Durham, where John Coutts meticulously sets out his soldiers for a recreation of the historic Battle of Minden from 1759. The room at Durham University's Dunelm House is filled with an array of horsemen and soldiers donning vibrant uniforms that belonged to regiments long forgotten by time. This grand spectacle was part of "Warfare through the Ages" a prominent war games and military modeling exhibition in the North. Remarkably, all these brave combatants were no more than one-and-a-half inches tall, yet their presence commanded attention and admiration. The exhibition not only showcased historical recreations but also delved into realms of fantasy and science fiction. Bands of adventurous wizards and dwarfs valiantly fought against dragons, goblins, and even alien creatures from distant galaxies. As we delve deeper into this photograph, it becomes evident that each miniature soldier represents countless hours dedicated to a cherished hobby. Their creator stands proudly amidst his creation - one mid-adult man who poured his heart into every intricate detail. This snapshot captures both pride and passion within its frame - a testament to human fascination with history, warfare, imagination, and craftsmanship. It serves as a reminder that even in our modern age, there remains an enduring allure for tales of battles fought long ago or those imagined beyond our wildest dreams.
