His home blitzed but he still hits out and opens the cricket season 1944

His home blitzed but he still hits out and opens the cricket season 1944. John Hudd aged 7 is star batsman on the cricket pitch at the blitzed site in Clarkson St Canning Town. His little brother Freddie aged 4 is pretty good at wicket too. The pitch is not too good rather to much in the way of bricks and mortar for no wonder Johnny and Freddies home used to stand more or less on the spot. It was just an ordinary little home somewhat similar in design to those pathetic skeletons in the background when in 1941 Jerry pressed the button and blasted it to the ground.
Our Picture Shows Billie Hudd aged 6 as wicket keeper cheering as the batsman John Hudd is clean bowled brother Freddie can be seen fielding in the background

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming print from 1944, we witness the indomitable spirit of young John Hudd, a star batsman on the cricket pitch in Clarkson St Canning Town. Despite his home being blitzed during World War II, John refuses to let adversity dampen his love for the game. The remnants of bricks and mortar scattered across the makeshift pitch serve as a poignant reminder of the destruction that once stood where Johnny and Freddie's ordinary little home used to be. At just seven years old, John showcases his talent with every swing of the bat while four-year-old Freddie proves himself as a promising wicket-keeper. In the background, their sister Billie Hudd aged six can be seen cheering enthusiastically as her brother takes on an opponent's delivery. It is a testament to their resilience and determination amidst such challenging times. This snapshot captures not only a moment of joy and camaraderie but also symbolizes how sports can provide solace and unity even in the darkest hours. George Greenwell's photograph preserves this beautiful memory from Memory Lane Prints, reminding us all that even when faced with unimaginable hardships, humanity finds strength through laughter, playfulness, and shared experiences like these on the cricket field during World War II.
