Wartime favourite Dame Vera Lynn brought the blitz commemoration to life this morning

Wartime favourite Dame Vera Lynn brought the blitz commemoration to life this morning - by flicking on a period radio set and listening to the announcement that heralded the Second World War. Exactly 50 yerars on from the great air raid of November 1940, Dame Vera arrived to help the people of Coventry mark the anniversary and the re-emergence of the city. She opened a Blitz Experience exhibition at Coventrys Museum of British Road Transport, which recreates the citys darkest night in sight and sound. Afterwards she described the exhibition as " realistic and quite frightening in a way." She said: " It will make a lot of people aware of what happened. It isn t glorifying it at all." Later on she was due to switch on the Christmas lights. She will also lead the community singing in Broadgate tonight. She arrived at the museum in a car used by Field Marshall Viscount Montgomery, with a crowd singing We ll Meet Again to welcome her.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Wartime favorite Dame Vera Lynn brings the blitz commemoration to life in this photo print. The image captures a poignant moment as Dame Vera flicks on a period radio set, listening intently to the announcement that heralded the Second World War. Exactly 50 years after the great air raid of November 1940, Dame Vera arrived in Coventry to help mark this solemn anniversary and celebrate the city's re-emergence. At Coventry's Museum of British Road Transport, she opened the Blitz Experience exhibition, which skillfully recreates the city's darkest night through immersive sights and sounds. Reflecting on her visit, Dame Vera described the exhibition as both realistic and quite frightening—a powerful reminder for all who experience it about what happened during those tumultuous times. She emphasized that it does not glorify war but rather raises awareness. Later in the day, Dame Vera was scheduled to switch on Coventry's Christmas lights and lead community singing in Broadgate—an event eagerly anticipated by locals. Arriving at the museum in a car once used by Field Marshall Viscount Montgomery, she was greeted with heartfelt renditions of "We'll Meet Again" by an enthusiastic crowd. This remarkable photograph from November 14th, 1990—captured by Memory Lane Prints—not only immortalizes one of Britain's most beloved wartime figures but also serves as a testament to resilience and remembrance.
