Vintage car fans hit the road yesterday at the start of a marathon trip in aid of charity

Vintage car fans hit the road yesterday at the start of a marathon trip in aid of charity. A team of three Rotarians hope their 718-mile round journey to Glasgow will raise a bumper amount of cash for mentally handicapped people. Their ambitious trip also marks the 40th birthday of a Coventry-built car, the Lea-Francis shooting-brake. Bob Redwood and his two co-drivers Dr Jim Collier and John Liposits were flagged off from Coventrys Transport Museum by former lord mayor Councillor Jeff White. Mr Redwood, who has spent three years restoring the car to its former glory, said they were driving from Coventry to Glasgow because the car was built here in 1949 and registered in Glasgow the following year. The team, which represents the Rotary Club of Lichfield St Chad, will take in 56 towns and 80 rotary clubs and will raise money for Mencap. Mr. Redwood said: " its a true Coventry vehicle and we thought it appropriate to start the journey here." Mr Redwood, a chartered automobile engineer who was brought up in Coventry and now lives in Lichfield, spotted the car in 1983 in a newspaper advertisement. He estimates its worth to be more than £ 30, 000.
In our photo are the drivers, Robert Redwood and John Liposits(front left & right) with Lichfield Rotary club member Brian Lomas(back left), Robert Archulus(far left), co-driver Jim Collier (back right) and Jeff White (far right).
