It was the angling date of the year for two lads from Coventry Boys Club
It was the angling date of the year for two lads from Coventry Boys Club. " Would you like to fish with entertainer and keen angler Frankie Vaughan?" they were asked. The youngsters, Les Matthews and Ian Hadlow, turned up and found themselves casting their lines with the star into a brook that runs through Abbey Fields, Kenilworth. With them were two members of the Kenilworth St Johns Boys Club, Howard Boneham and Nigel Beasley. They didn t catch a thing. But Frankie made four firm fans. " He really knows his stuff on fishing and is so easy to talk to, " said Les. Frankie paid a flying visit to Kenilworth to speak at the annual lunch of the Angling Trade Association at the de Montford Hotel. the association had invited local boys clubs to offer members the chance to fish with Frankie. He announced that he would be talking to the National Association of Boys Clubs, of which he is president, with a view to setting up Frankie Vaughan angling scholarships. " A youngster with a rod in his hand is a far more responsible member of society than a lad with a brick in his hand, " he said. " Every Saturday half a million youngsters go fishing and never rate a single line in Monday mornings papers. Why? Because they don t hurl darts at each other, break windows, or wreak trains." Our photgraph shows Frankie Vaughan raising a laugh with a rubber worm with (l to r) Ian Hadlow, Les Matthews, Nigel Beasley and Howard Boneham.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this nostalgic print from 10th May 1978, we witness the angling date of the year for two lads from Coventry Boys Club. When asked if they would like to fish with entertainer and keen angler Frankie Vaughan, Les Matthews and Ian Hadlow eagerly accepted the invitation. Joined by Howard Boneham and Nigel Beasley from Kenilworth St Johns Boys Club, these young anglers found themselves casting their lines alongside the star in a picturesque brook that runs through Abbey Fields, Kenilworth. Although they didn't manage to catch anything on this particular outing, what they gained was far more valuable - four firm fans of Frankie Vaughan himself. Described as knowledgeable about fishing and incredibly easy to talk to, Frankie made a lasting impression on these boys. Frankie's visit to Kenilworth was part of his attendance at the annual lunch of the Angling Trade Association at de Montford Hotel. The association had invited local boys clubs for an opportunity to fish with him. Inspired by this experience, he announced plans to establish Frankie Vaughan angling scholarships through discussions with the National Association of Boys Clubs. According to Frankie, having a youngster engage in fishing makes them a responsible member of society compared to those who resort to destructive behavior. He emphasized that half a million youngsters go fishing every Saturday without causing any trouble or making headlines because they choose peaceful activities over mischief. This heartwarming photograph captures Frankie Vaughan raising laughter among these young anglers as he playfully uses a rubber worm during their memorable day together in nature's tranquility.
