Smoke rises from behind the dome of St Pauls Cathedral after the first daylight bombing
Smoke rises from behind the dome of St Pauls Cathedral after the first daylight bombing raid by the Luftwaffe (German Airforce) on the docks and the East End of London in September 1940. The Luftwaffes change of tactics from bombing RAF fighter bases at the height of the Battle of Britain to bombing London followed the RAF bombing raid on Berlin. This raid had been ordered by Winston Churchill after London was accidentally bomb at the end of August 1940 when a flight of Luftwaffe bombers lost their way during a night attack on the fuel depots along the Thames Estuary and dumped their bombs on the East End of London. 7th September 1940

Smoke Engulfs St Paul's Cathedral - A Glimpse into London's Darkest Days
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a haunting scene from the heart of London during World War II. As smoke billows behind the iconic dome of St Paul's Cathedral, we are transported back to September 1940, when the city endured its first daylight bombing raid by the Luftwaffe. The image serves as a stark reminder of the Luftwaffe's change in tactics, shifting their focus from RAF fighter bases to targeting London directly. This strategic decision came in response to an earlier RAF bombing raid on Berlin ordered by Winston Churchill. The unintended consequence was that it unleashed a relentless wave of destruction upon England's capital. The photograph also harks back to an accidental bomb drop at the end of August 1940 when wayward Luftwaffe bombers mistakenly targeted East End neighborhoods instead of intended fuel depots along the Thames Estuary. These events set in motion a series of devastating air raids known as "The Blitz". As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we witness not only the physical devastation but also glimpse into the resilience and determination displayed by Londoners throughout this tumultuous period. It is a testament to their unwavering spirit that despite facing unimaginable hardships, they stood strong against adversity. George Greenwell’s masterful capture allows us to reflect on this pivotal moment in history and pay homage to those who lived through these dark days with courage and fortitude.
