Death of King George VI - crowds gather at the gates of Buckingham Palace
Death of King George VI - crowds gather at the gates of Buckingham Palace. Sir Winston Churchill, who was Prime Minister at the time, had to make the sad announcement to the country, that King George VI had passed away at Sandringham, on the 6th of February, 1952. Christened Albert Arthur Frederick George. Known to the royal family as Bertie. Was Prince Albert, Duke of York (1920-1936). Acceded as George VI following his brothers abdication on 11 Dec.1936. It has been widely suggested that George was not ready for the crown when it came to him and that the unexpected pressure it placed on him led to his ill health and premature death. His reign was marked by the relinquishment of the title of Emperor of India, following the partition of India in 1947 into India and Pakistan. George VI had cancer of the lung, (one lung had to be removed). He died of cancer following a long illness. Bertie had a speech defect which made him stutter and stammer

Death of King George VI - A Nation Mourns the Loss of a Beloved Monarch
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this poignant photo print, we witness a solemn moment in history as crowds gather at the gates of Buckingham Palace to pay their respects to the late King George VI. The year is 1952, and Sir Winston Churchill, then Prime Minister, stands before the nation with a heavy heart to announce the passing of our revered monarch. Born Albert Arthur Frederick George but affectionately known as Bertie within his family, King George VI ascended to the throne following his brother's abdication in 1936. However, it has been widely speculated that he was unprepared for such immense responsibility, which took its toll on his health and ultimately led to his premature death. During his reign, marked by significant events like India's partition into India and Pakistan in 1947, King George VI battled cancer while coping with a speech defect that caused him to stutter and stammer. Despite these challenges, he endeavored tirelessly for his people until illness claimed him. This photograph captures not only the collective grief felt by those who gathered outside Buckingham Palace but also serves as a testament to King George VI's enduring legacy. His memory lives on through images like this one – reminding us of an era defined by resilience and unwavering dedication to duty. Photo credit: Manchester Mirror from Memory Lane Prints
