At 3pm on 8 May 1945, Prime Minister, Winston Churchill announced that the war in Europe would end at midnight. London erupted into a massive chorus of jubilation and celebration. Mr Churchill was greeted by huge cheering crowds wherever he went and the King was kept busy by a crowd outside Buckingham Palace who made him keep returning to the balcony to receive their accolades. Even his own daughters, escorted by Palace guards, joined the crowd in shouting for the King. All licensing laws in the capital were revoked for the evening and the celebrations went on well into the small hours.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the sheer joy and exuberance that engulfed London on 8 May 1945. As the clock struck 3 pm, Prime Minister Winston Churchill's historic announcement reverberated through the city: the war in Europe would end at midnight. The news ignited an explosion of jubilation, transforming London into a sea of celebration. In this particular snapshot, taken on Denmark Street, residents found a unique way to express their elation. Hanging out their washing lines adorned with Union Jack flags, they symbolically rejoiced in victory while paying homage to a popular wartime song: "We'll hang the washing out on the Siegfried Line". This simple act encapsulated both relief and defiance against Nazi oppression. Churchill himself became an emblem of hope as he ventured through cheering crowds who hailed him as a hero wherever he went. Buckingham Palace was no exception; King George VI repeatedly appeared on its balcony to receive adulation from an impassioned crowd that refused to let him retreat indoors. The spirit of liberation was so overwhelming that all licensing laws were suspended for one night only, allowing revelers to continue celebrating well into the early hours. This photograph preserves not just a momentous occasion but also serves as a testament to resilience and unity during one of history's darkest chapters – World War II.
