Harold Wilson, former Labour Prime Minister, and wife Mary in October 1974 Wilson

Harold Wilson, former Labour Prime Minister, and wife Mary in October 1974
Wilson was the Labour leader who ended " 13 years of Tory mis-rule", winning the 1964 General Election by just four seats. Within two years, his margin was unworkable and Wilson went back to the country, winning the 1966 poll in more-comfortable style - 96 majority. He suffered a surprise defeat to Ted Heath in 1970 but came back to power in 1974 following a hung Parliament and a second election in the same year, winning by three seats. Two years later, he stunned the country by resigning on his 60th birthday in 1976 and handing over to Jim Callaghan. In later life, it transpired he was suffering from Alzheimers Disease. He died in 1995

EDITORS COMMENTS
Harold Wilson, former Labour Prime Minister, and his wife Mary captured in October 1974. Wilson was a prominent figure who brought an end to '13 years of Tory mis-rule' by winning the narrow 1964 General Election victory with just four seats. However, within two years, he faced challenges due to an unworkable majority and called for another election in 1966 which resulted in a more comfortable win with a majority of 96 seats. Despite suffering a surprising defeat to Ted Heath in 1970, Wilson made a remarkable comeback in 1974 after a hung Parliament and subsequent second election that year, securing victory by only three seats. In an unexpected turn of events on his 60th birthday in 1976, Wilson shocked the nation by resigning from office and handing over leadership to Jim Callaghan. It later became known that he had been battling Alzheimer's Disease during his later years. Harold Wilson passed away in 1995. This print showcases the essence of the era as it portrays Harold Wilson enjoying his pipe while engaging in political discussions alongside his supportive wife Mary. The image encapsulates not only their personal bond but also highlights their significant roles within British politics during the turbulent times of the seventies.
