EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the new face of war in the 1990s. The brave British tank driver featured here was a member of the renowned 1st Armoured Division, whose valor and determination were crucial during Operation "Desert Storm" in January 1991. This operation marked the Allied forces' resolute attack on Iraq, aiming to liberate Kuwait from its occupation by Iraqi forces. While the initial phase of this historic conflict involved a sustained bombing campaign on strategic military and economic targets within Iraq, it was soldiers like this tank driver who truly embodied the spirit of courage on the ground. Their moment arrived when orders came for them to drive into Kuwait, where they would play an instrumental role in reclaiming its freedom. The morning of February 24th witnessed their relentless attack, as these soldiers fearlessly pushed forward towards their objective. After days filled with unwavering dedication and countless battles fought side by side with fellow comrades, Kuwait was finally liberated on February 28th. In this image, we see a true hero adorned in military attire - helmet securely fastened and goggles protecting his eyes from dust and debris. His presence symbolizes not only his personal bravery but also that of all those who served alongside him during this tumultuous period in history. Preserved through time by Gavin Kent's lens, this print serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifice, resilience, and triumph amidst one of modern warfare's defining moments – forever etched into our collective memory.
