EDITORS COMMENTS
This mammoth aircraft, with a wingspan of 230ft and fuselage length 177ft, was the largest land plane ever built in Britain. The Bristol Type 167 Brabazon, equipped with eight Bristol Centaurus engines driving four pairs of contra-rotating propellers, took flight on September 4th, 1949. A J (Bill) Pegg skillfully piloted the historic first flight. Constructed at Filton in Bristol between 1944 and 1949 at a cost of £3 million (equivalent to nearly £300 million today), this impressive aircraft was designed to carry an economical load from London to New York. However, despite high hopes and expectations, it failed to live up to its potential. Unfortunately, all work on the Brabazon project came to a halt in 1952. The aircraft itself and a partially completed second one were eventually dismantled in subsequent years. This print captures the awe-inspiring moment when the Brabazon took off for its maiden voyage. It serves as a reminder of both the ambition and challenges faced by British aviation during this era. Bristol B167 Brabazon will forever be remembered as an ambitious engineering feat that pushed boundaries but ultimately fell short of its intended purpose.
