Children collecting firewood from bombed building september 1941 OP136 W376A box 46 y2k
The Blitz refers to the strategic bombing campaign conducted by the Germans against London and other cities in England from September of 1940 through to May 1941, targetting populated areas, factories and dockyards. At the outbreak of the war all Londoners were given gas masks in case of attack. Children were no exception. Infact, they were given a special Mickey Mouse gas mask (age 2-4). For younger children a special hood was developed to go over their prams. It soon emerged though that chemical weapons weren t the problem, but more conventional bombs. Obviously gas masks were no protection against these so a new strategy of sending children to the country as evacuees was developed. Many children spent most of the war away from home and returned to cities ravaged by the blitz.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the harsh reality of life during the Blitz in September 1941. In the aftermath of a devastating bombing, children can be seen collecting firewood from a bombed building. The image serves as a reminder of the resilience and resourcefulness displayed by young ones amidst the chaos and destruction. During this period, Londoners were constantly under threat from German bombings, prompting authorities to distribute gas masks to all citizens as a precautionary measure. Even children were not exempt from this safety protocol and were provided with special Mickey Mouse gas masks designed for their age group. However, it soon became apparent that conventional bombs posed a greater danger than chemical weapons. To protect them from further harm, a new strategy was devised: evacuating children to safer rural areas away from targeted cities. Many youngsters spent most of the war separated from their families, only returning home once hostilities had ceased. The photograph encapsulates both the innocence and bravery exhibited by these young individuals who faced unimaginable challenges at such tender ages. It stands as a testament to their strength and resilience in times of adversity. As we reflect on this powerful image, let us remember those who endured through one of history's darkest chapters – World War II – and honor their sacrifices for future generations' freedom and peace.
