York Minster is a Gothic cathedral in York, England and is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europel. The Minster is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the second-highest office of the Church of England, and is cathedral for the Diocese of York. The title " Minster" is attributed to churches established in the Anglo Saxon period as missionary teaching churches
The Minister has a very wide Decorated Gothic nave and chapter house. The nave contains the West Window, constructed in 1338, and over the Lady Chapel in the east end is the Great East Window, (finished in 1408), the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. In the north transept is the Five Sisters Window, each lancet being over 16 metres (52 ft) high. The south transept contains the famous Rose window.
A fire in 1984 destroyed the roof in the south transept, and around £ 2.5 million was spent on repairs. Restoration work was completed in 1988. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of York Minster, a remarkable Gothic cathedral in York, England. As one of the largest cathedrals of its kind in Northern Europe, it holds great historical and religious significance. Serving as the seat of the Archbishop of York and cathedral for the Diocese of York, this magnificent structure has been an integral part of English Christianity for centuries. The Minster's awe-inspiring architecture is evident in its wide Decorated Gothic nave and chapter house. The West Window, constructed in 1338, adorns the nave while the Great East Window boasts as the world's largest expanse of medieval stained glass since its completion in 1408. Notably, visitors are mesmerized by the Five Sisters Window with each lancet towering over 16 meters high. However, adversity struck when a devastating fire ravaged through the south transept's roof in 1984. Determined to restore this architectural marvel to its former glory, approximately £2.5 million was invested into repairs which were successfully completed four years later. This particular image captures a moment during restoration work on York Minster back in 1970. It offers a glimpse into both its timeless beauty and enduring resilience throughout history. Whether you admire it from High Petergate or witness it firsthand within its hallowed walls today, York Minster remains an iconic symbol that embodies faith and architectural brilliance intertwined harmoniously.
