At the ripe old age pf 2Aoe years tiny Caroline Smith, daughter of Ken Smith Superintendant

At the ripe old age pf 2 years tiny Caroline Smith, daughter of Ken Smith Superintendant at the Jersey, Channel Islands Zoo is the real friends of all the animals. So much so that even the three years old gorilla " N pongo", as strong as he is can be seen handled like a baby doll. Visitors are shocked at her lack of fear, and the fact that monkeys, and many other types of animals come in for petting every day when she toddles round the cages. Caroline is the daughter of a Zoo family, for her mother Trudy and Father Ken had Paington Zoo as their home for some time, when Caroline arrived in Jersey she was a month old, and arrived by boat nestling in a cot surrounded by birds in the cabin. Since then she has grown up with the animals. She shares her sweets with them. The ant eater with his long nose is just another friend, or even the giant lizard, who thrusts out his tongue alarmingly. March 1961 P2121-006

EDITORS COMMENTS
At the ripe old age of 2 years, tiny Caroline Smith has become a beloved figure at the Jersey, Channel Islands Zoo. As the daughter of Ken Smith, the zoo's superintendent, Caroline has grown up surrounded by animals and has formed an extraordinary bond with them. Visitors to the zoo are often taken aback by Caroline's fearlessness and her ability to interact with even the largest and strongest creatures. In this print captured in March 1961, we see three-year-old gorilla 'Npongo' being handled like a baby doll by little Caroline. The sight is both astonishing and heartwarming. Caroline's parents, Trudy and Ken, were also deeply connected to the world of zoos before settling in Jersey. When she was just one month old, Caroline arrived on the island via boat accompanied by a flock of birds in her cabin cot. Since then, she has grown alongside these magnificent creatures who have become her extended family. Whether it's sharing sweets with monkeys or petting various animals as she toddles around their cages each day, Caroline exudes an unwavering love for all living beings. Even peculiar creatures like giant lizards or ant eaters find solace in her presence. This photograph beautifully captures not only a remarkable friendship between young Caroline and Npongo but also showcases how compassion can transcend species boundaries.
