Initially successful, PeglerOs US backers later withdrew
Initially successful, PeglerOs US backers later withdrew, sadly forcing him into bankruptcy in 1972. Flying Scotsman was stranded in San Francisco and threatened with being broken up until bought and rescued by Sir William McAlpine. Repatriated via Liverpool, the loco is seen at Manchester Victoria, still with regulation US bell, on September 23, 1973.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of the iconic locomotive, The Flying Scotsman. Initially successful, its US backers unfortunately withdrew their support, plunging its creator, PeglerOs, into bankruptcy in 1972. Left stranded in San Francisco and facing the threat of being dismantled forever, this magnificent train was saved from such a fate by Sir William McAlpine. In this snapshot taken on September 23rd, 1973 at Manchester Victoria Station, we witness The Flying Scotsman's triumphant return to British soil after being repatriated via Liverpool. Despite its transatlantic journey and change of ownership, the locomotive retains one distinct feature - its regulation US bell. The image showcases The Flying Scotsman standing proudly on the platform amidst an atmosphere buzzing with anticipation. Passengers eagerly await their departure as they board this legendary train that has become synonymous with luxury travel between London and Edinburgh. Preserved for future generations to admire and enjoy, The Flying Scotsman serves as a reminder of both triumphs and setbacks faced by engineering marvels throughout history. This photograph not only encapsulates an important chapter in railway heritage but also pays homage to those who fought tirelessly to preserve it for generations to come.
