Evacuations of civilians in Britain during World War II was designed to save

Evacuations of civilians in Britain during World War II was designed to save the population of urban or military areas from German aerial bombing of cities and military targets such as docks. Children, were moved to rural areas thought to be less at risk. Operation Pied Piper started on the 1st September and went on to the 3rd September 1939. More than 1.5 million people were evacuated. Further waves of official evacuation and re-evacuation occurred from the south and east coast in June 1940, when a seaborne invasion was expected, and from affected cities after the Blitz began in September 1940. Our picture shows: Excited crowd of boys and girls seen here boarding a train which will take them to outlying villages. 3rd September 1939

EDITORS COMMENTS
Evacuations of civilians in Britain during World War II were a crucial measure implemented to safeguard the population from German aerial bombings. This print captures a poignant moment on September 3,1939, as excited boys and girls gather at a train station, ready to embark on a journey that would take them to safer rural areas. Operation Pied Piper, spanning from September 1-3, saw over 1.5 million people evacuated in an effort to protect urban and military zones such as docks. As fears of invasion grew in June 1940, further waves of official evacuation took place along the south and east coastlines. The threat intensified with the onset of the Blitz in September 1940, prompting additional evacuations from affected cities. During this tumultuous time on the home front, railways became lifelines for countless children seeking refuge. The image showcases their anticipation and hope for safety as they board carriages bound for outlying villages. It serves as a powerful reminder of both the resilience and vulnerability experienced by these young evacuees during one of history's darkest periods. Preserved by Memory Lane Prints, this snapshot transports us back to an era defined by sacrifice and unity against adversity. Let it stand as a testament to those who endured hardship while striving to protect future generations.
