EDITORS COMMENTS
A Glimpse into Coventry's Pub Culture: The Birth of CALL". In this photo print, we witness the birth of an empowering movement within Coventry's pub scene. A new organization for licensees' wives has emerged, known as the Coventry Association of Licensees Ladies (CALL). This breakaway group from the well-established Coventry & District Licensed Victuallers Association Ladies Auxiliary marks a significant milestone in women's involvement in the traditionally male-dominated industry. The image captures three remarkable women who attended CALL's inaugural meeting. From left to right, we see Mrs Betty Knibb from Royal Oak on Stoney Stanton Road, Mrs Anna Fleming from Golden Eagle on Foleshill Road, and Mrs Mary Coates from Horse and Jockey in Corley. These pioneering ladies embody strength and determination as they gather to discuss their shared experiences and challenges faced as landladies. Dated 27th January 1977, this photograph transports us back to a vibrant era when pubs were at the heart of community life. It serves as a poignant reminder that behind every successful establishment stood resilient women who played instrumental roles in shaping local culture. This Memory Lane Print offers a glimpse into an important chapter of Coventry's history – one that celebrates female empowerment and camaraderie among licensees' wives. As we reflect upon this image, let us acknowledge these unsung heroines whose contributions have enriched our cityscape for generations to come.
