Fundraising was a wheel challenge for these two marathon roller skaters

Fundraising was a wheel challenge for these two marathon roller skaters.
This photograph, taken from the Chronicle archives, shows friends Paul Johnson, 24, from Wallsend, and David Coe, 21, from North Shields, as they set off on a charity skate to London on July 17 1981. The pair, who had never skated before they decided to take up the 350-mile challenge, were raising money for the Charlie Bear appeal to buy a body scanning unit.
In preparation for the trip, the lads skated up to 20 miles a day and hoped to skate between 40 and 45 miles a day during the challenge, with the aim of reaching London by July 28.
The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Coun Bennie Abrahams, was on hand to send the lads off on their way.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the incredible journey of two determined individuals, Paul Johnson and David Coe, as they embarked on a challenging fundraising endeavor. In July 1981, these marathon roller skaters set off from Wallsend and North Shields respectively, with the aim of skating all the way to London – a staggering distance of 350 miles! The purpose behind their grueling adventure was to raise funds for the Charlie Bear appeal in order to purchase a much-needed body scanning unit. What makes this feat even more remarkable is that neither Paul nor David had any prior experience in roller skating before taking up this monumental challenge. To prepare themselves for the arduous trip ahead, they dedicated countless hours each day to skate up to 20 miles. With unwavering determination and an indomitable spirit, they hoped to cover between 40 and 45 miles daily during their journey, aiming to reach London by July 28. As they set off on their noble mission, these brave skaters were bid farewell by none other than the Lord Mayor of Newcastle himself – Coun Bennie Abrahams. This heartwarming photograph serves as a testament not only to their physical endurance but also highlights the power of friendship and community support when it comes to making a difference in people's lives through charitable initiatives.
