The Dornier Do-X flying boat, November 1930, was built at Altenrhein

The Dornier Do-X flying boat, November 1930, was built at Altenrhein, Switzerland by Aktiengesellschaft fur Dornier-Flugzeuge.
It was the largest, heaviest and most powerful flying boat in the world when it made its first flight on 25 July 1929.
Conceived by German constructor, Dr Claudius Dornier it took seven years to design and a further two to build.
In the design process, a one-to-one wooden mock-up was built, the first in aviation history.
It carried 150 passengers plus a crew of 10 and is pictured prior to a Trans-Atlantic flight, which left Friedrichshafen, piloted by Capt Christiansen, on 2nd November 1930.
It was damaged en-route at both Lisbon and the Canary Islands, finally arriving in New York almost a year later on 27 August 1931; the return flight left on 19 May 1932.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Dornier Do-X: A Triumph of Aviation Engineering". This print captures the awe-inspiring Dornier Do-X flying boat, a true marvel of its time. Built in Altenrhein, Switzerland by Aktiengesellschaft fur Dornier-Flugzeuge, this magnificent aircraft took to the skies on 25 July 1929, instantly claiming the title of the largest, heaviest, and most powerful flying boat in existence. Conceived by visionary German constructor Dr Claudius Dornier, this remarkable feat of engineering required seven years of meticulous design and an additional two years for construction. Notably, it was during this process that aviation history was made with the creation of a one-to-one wooden mock-up – a testament to the groundbreaking nature of this project. Capable of carrying an astonishing 150 passengers along with a crew of 10 individuals, this photograph depicts the majestic aircraft prior to embarking on its Trans-Atlantic flight from Friedrichshafen. Under the skilled piloting prowess of Capt Christiansen, it set off on 2nd November 1930 towards new horizons. However, not without challenges along its journey; en-route at Lisbon and later at the Canary Islands, it suffered damages before finally reaching New York almost a year later on 27 August 1931. Undeterred by adversity and showcasing unparalleled resilience in aviation history, The return flight commenced on 19 May 1932 – marking yet another milestone for human ingenuity and determination. This extraordinary piece exemplifies not only technological advancement but also embodies mankind's unyielding spirit to conquer new frontiers through innovation.
