Men of the Lancashire Fusiliers camped in a hanger in Nairobi clean their weapons
Men of the Lancashire Fusiliers camped in a hanger in Nairobi clean their weapons (9mm Sten Submachine Gun and SMLE.303 Lee Enfield Mk.4 rifle) in Kenya during the Mau-Mau crisis 1952
October 1952.
British troops were sent to Kenya on the 19th of October 1952 to help deal with the growing Mau Mau uprising. Mau Mau members were travelling around openly throughout the day using pangas (blades) and firearms to attack their victims. Once the British army arrived the Mau Mau were forced out of the towns and into more wooded areas in the hills around Nairobi. Thsi didn t resolve the problem however. The attacks continued and even regular sweeps through the forests with Kenyan trackers failed to dislodge the Mau Mau. In the end despite the rounding up of thousands of suspects it was decided that the only solution was to offer an amnesty to theMau Mau, a move that incensed the white land owners.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a significant moment during the Mau-Mau crisis in Kenya, October 1952. The image showcases brave men of the Lancashire Fusiliers camped inside a hanger in Nairobi, diligently cleaning their weapons amidst the chaos. With a 9mm Sten Submachine Gun and SMLE . 303 Lee Enfield Mk. 4 rifle in hand, these British troops were sent to Kenya to combat the escalating Mau Mau uprising. During this time, Mau Mau members roamed freely throughout the day, armed with pangas (blades) and firearms as they mercilessly attacked innocent victims. In response, British forces pushed them out of urban areas into wooded regions surrounding Nairobi but failed to fully eradicate their presence. Despite numerous attempts by Kenyan trackers and regular sweeps through forests, the elusive Mau Mau remained undeterred. Frustrated by their inability to quell the violence and unrest, authorities ultimately decided that offering an amnesty was the only viable solution. This controversial decision sparked outrage among white landowners who felt betrayed. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of not only the bravery exhibited by these Lancashire Fusiliers but also highlights both sides' determination during this tumultuous period in Kenyan history. Preserved by Manchester Mirror's Memory Lane Prints collection, it stands as a testament to those who fought tirelessly for peace amid one of Africa's most challenging conflicts - an enduring symbol of resilience and sacrifice.
