Men of the Lancashire Fusiliers set up home in a hanger in Nairobi in Kenya during

Men of the Lancashire Fusiliers set up home in a hanger in Nairobi in Kenya during the Mau-Mau crisis 1952
October 1952.
British troops were sent to Kenya on the 19th of October 1952 to help deal with the growing Mau Mau uprising. Mau Mau members were travelling around openly throughout the day using pangas (blades) and firearms to attack their victims. Once the British army arrived the Mau Mau were forced out of the towns and into more wooded areas in the hills around Nairobi. Thsi didn t resolve the problem however. The attacks continued and even regular sweeps through the forests with Kenyan trackers failed to dislodge the Mau Mau. In the end despite the rounding up of thousands of suspects it was decided that the only solution was to offer an amnesty to theMau Mau, a move that incensed the white land owners.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Men of the Lancashire Fusiliers find refuge in a hangar, transforming it into their makeshift home during the tumultuous Mau-Mau crisis in Nairobi, Kenya. This powerful photograph captures the resilience and adaptability of British troops as they confront the escalating violence that plagued Kenya in October 1952. The Mau Mau uprising had reached alarming proportions, with members freely roaming throughout the day armed with pangas and firearms, terrorizing innocent civilians. In response to this grave threat, British forces were deployed to restore order and protect local communities. However, even after pushing the Mau Mau out of urban areas and into wooded hills surrounding Nairobi, their attacks persisted. Despite numerous efforts by Kenyan trackers and extensive sweeps through forests, dislodging the elusive Mau Mau proved challenging for the British army. Frustrated by these setbacks and facing mounting pressure from white landowners affected by ongoing violence, authorities eventually decided to extend an amnesty offer to quell tensions. This evocative print serves as a poignant reminder of a turbulent era marked by conflict, civil war, colonialism – themes that shaped Africa's struggle for independence during the 1950s. Preserved within Memory Lane Prints' collection from Manchester Mirror newspaper archives is this historical snapshot depicting both courage amidst adversity and complex dynamics at play during one chapter of Kenya's journey towards self-determination.
